Chuck: When I tell my computer to delete e-mail messages...
Chuck: Where do they go?
Banks: To a far-away, magical place called... "Cleveland!"
Banks: They go into the trash thingy... I dunno... What am I, The wizard of Id?
I have this theory that we’re surrounded by an ether of deleted messages, things that got sent to the printer and never printed, etc. The first person to invent the technology to recover individual items from this ether will be a millionaire—on the blackmail alone.
When anything on a computer is deleted, only the directory entry is deleted, and the space it occupies is marked as unused. The actual message remains until the space is reallocated to something else.
