Morning, Everybody.Good luck finding made in USA T-shirts. Even looking through a pile of what look like the same plain tank tops, in the same size, you may find some were made in Guatemala, some in Cambodia or Indonesia …and when I try them on, they sometimes fit differently. But that Toyota might be made in the US, so the shirt could be appropriate.I want a translation of Verl’s shirt…yeah, it’s a comic so it probably isn’t real Chinese….but if it were it would say “Huge American Slob.”Actually, I’ve always thought that about tourist items….I mean, what if you made 50 cents an hour carving little bone cufflinks with “Good luck” or “Longevity” in Chinese characters? You know the eventual customers won’t be able to read them…so wouldn’t some say “Up yours, Yankee idiot?”When I sold vintage jewelry, if asked, I’d always “helpfully” translate the earrings as as “Long-nose Out of Chinatown” or “Bet You can’t Read This.”
Meanwhile….Colorists only get a few minutes per strip, so they don’t have time for too many colors…but isn’t all grey a kinda sad choice for that front rack?Marg — do we need another 200 gallon drum already??? Starting to sound like it.We should write Joy and Verla a thank you note for wearing shorts.(Of course, they think they look great.)If Jerry ever appears again as he did that one horrible time, our business will go through the roof! But it might not be worth having to see it again. We’d have to use a lot of our inventory on ourselves.
Oh…. I never got back here before “yesterday” changed to “today”….and I hate to backtrack, but just quickly….Finale, it doesn’t take much staying up.The strips come out at 10:15 pm here. It’ just ME that’s late.To those who commented about Buster Brown and Tige….How could I know this blond person was a boy, or that other scary creature was supposed to be a cute doggie?I ask you… is this not terrifying?
And Dave… you flatter me, I think. That guy was a little after my early grade school days.Even Leaky might be a bit younger than me…. sigh… cos I seem to remember being a bit old for Romper Room…my siblings watched it, but at that age I had watched “Ding Dong School.”I’m a boomer…but barely. And Marg — I am so glad you still have hope for us!At least I’ve been out buying tomato plants and pulling weeds… there’s a sun in the sky!It doesn’t use electricity!
Yeah, good luck finding any clothing (or material) made in the USA. Tell the folks all up and down the east coast what a great idea it was to move production to a low-wage place. BTW, for additional grins, check where your Early American furniture is made.
Somebody said the shirts in the front were all gray? They look purple on my screen. He is holding up a black shirt. We have a place in town that prints tee shirts for mostly colleges and universities. They have a warehouse where the public can buy stuff. It looks a lot like where this group is, except for the “New Chemises” sign. Some of the shirts are made here, but you have to look carefully for the tag. Please make the women wear pants again. Yikes! lol
Not that funny today. A good portion of Toyota are made in the U.S. Many U.S. brand cars are now assembled outside the country. A “miss” to Ms Larson today.
The Dinette Setabout a minute agoSome idiot fractured their ankle last week-yours truly – Julie Larson I am now officially ’it’s all about medical now for me’ following Burl and Joy’s footsteps, of which I must now be very careful getting around on 2 feet.
I’m not eligible for Little Rascal yet but might be on a waiting list soon for the Scooter Club. The injury must be more dramatic.(fractured ankle)
I will now be able to keep up with the conversation with everyone in the Doctor’s office waiting room adding my near death experience falling on my own sidewalk. JL
I did not have TV when a child until I watched “Your Hit Parade” We had no TV before my HS days. I got to see the early cooking show in Chicago of the Pope Family (prior to Julia Child). I am fortunate still not to need any assistance devices (I still do my weights- bench press 25 reps of 2 12# and 2 sets) and I bench row 3 sets of 15 #, others are less but I will be 75 this year. I drink a lot, but that is no proplem.
Julie! You forgot to follow my advice (given freely to all and sundry, at no charge,) to wit:Don’t fall down!I don’t know why no one listens…. tsk tsk.In reality, though, I’m sorry to hear, of course.Hope you didn’t strain any Dinette-Set-drawing muscles…but if we end up on re-runs while you convalesce, I’ll still be here.Be careful…. and stay out of Burl and Joy’s footsteps. You don’t want to end up anyplace they might show up.Get better soon!
But yes, I think I said then that the show advertised Buster Brown shoes.I also wore them, and knew that scary logo quite well, also a slightly more modern one — but Buster still looked weird and scary.
I also read the quaint-looking comic books (full of Buster Brown shoe ads, so they may have been a giveaway.)
… but the original Outcault Buster was even “girlier”:
The 1950’s one still wore what looked like a dress to me.and as I said, I wore a “Buster Brown” haircut, so it never occured to me Buster was a boy’s name. I was a little old to be so innocent…. cos we didn’t move to Cleveland (Heights) till I was 6 or or get a TV till I was 7.But times were different.
I think it was at the shoe store you got a little form to send in, and if your name was drawn, you got to come be in the on-air audience.

Our first TV was a Raytheon in the 1950s, but I don’t remember the year.
