Click-to-enlarge image available from here (last View All Sizes choice).National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, (where it currently resides) webpage for the painting, including a couple eTours that include it. Many different colorations are available on the internet, including several sketches (more if you click Show more results at the bottom of what’s displayed from that link), for this portrait of Diego Martelli (click the image a second time to get an enlargement of this coloration), but I don’t see this one. Here are some of the artist’s other works.Second of the 6 works by this artist, that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here.
This cracks me up…it is an almost exact copy of the illustration in my Intro to Psych text in college used to describe “anal retentives.” That one was a small child, but the posture and facial expression are dead on.
Okay … here’s the thing … that isn’t a chair. Its one of those racks galleries and artists use to display small unframed works of art on paper … watercolors, pastels, etchings, woodcuts, etc.

Well, maybe if you turned up the heat he would take his hands out of his armpits and then you could make him clean up.

Can you imagine what it would feel like to pose for that for a few hours at a time? Ouch!

Hmm… Ambroise Vollard looks all broken up over posing for Picasso. Thanks for the addition.

Re: the chair. I’ve never seen one, but do you think it might be something like this design?
