There have always been slaves, long before neighbouring African tribes sold their neighbours to white traders (NOT saying it’s a good thing). There still are slaves.-——————————————————————————————————-“But these young ladies, my good people, are of the finest, purest quality; guaranteed to be able to work long hours and bear strong children. Dig deep into your pockets……Lot number one – a fine Thracian……”
they need an evening gown portion of the teen concubine pageant? guys don’t really care about evening gowns, just scantily clad ladies is fine. and, they prefer nude ladies. this pageant must have been held at a gop fundraiser hosted by mormon mitt.
Actually, a sort of Babylonian Buy-a-Bride and bake sale.Wikipedia has a much larger view. (Sorry Mabrndt…. I’m sure you’ll be along later with more info.)
It does bear a real resemblance to a teen pageant. And all you guys who want one…. hope you’re young, healthy and rich.
Thanks to all for not letting this degenerate into a forum about supple thighs; firm, yearning body parts; unbridled passion; debauchery on a large scale and wistful dreams of lust and carnal visions
@SusanSunshine‘s click-to-enlarge-more enlargement available from here. But for some reason, for me anyway, it’s much larger in Safari, and Firefox, than it is in Chrome. Oh well …By the way Susan, what’s with the Sorry? I welcome any help in what I’ve been posting. Art is so far from my area of expertise, it’s laughable. In my retirement, I try to learn something new each day, and this has been an easy way to fulfill that.Usually, it’s been difficult to find information about the painting. With this painting, it’s been difficult to pick what to point to. 20 pages of an online book are devoted to it. It has several detail images from the painting. When I first looked at Susan’s image, I was drawn to the girl holding the mirror (which practically lights up her face, one of the detail images) — is that mirror trick common in art? Here‘s a radio clip about the subject of the painting. There are several different colorations for this painting. I wonder how the Wikipedia image can have such muted colors, when this exists (available from here). This also has more intense colors. This is the image chosen by its current location. So far, only work by this artist to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog.
I have no idea. According to my artist link, another one of his paintings is titled Queen Esther, and if you follow the Susa link, she was the queen who saved the Jews from genocide while in Babylonian captivity. But I don’t know how she became queen, if it was by blood or by marriage. I’m not a Biblical scholar.
Neither am I. However, I am very confident that Mabrndt has never sold a used car in his life. Like you, I have learned a lot from his research. (course when you don’t know much about art to start with…)
Walls in ancient times were covered with tapestries (woven usually, but even painted) – whatever people could afford. I was an art student and have always done much of my own. Tapestries had bright colors and most have since lost those colors. I did a painted version for a party celebrating the Danelaw wedding feast (on a sized piece of percale about 72"W x 30"H). I based the details on the Bayeaux Tapestry.
Regarding my first comment:Its book link now points to something you have to pay for (wasn’t the case when I posted it). While perhaps not as informative, this description is, for now, free. Corrected this link and last This link.Another work by this artist can be found here.
