Grandma: I'm old enough to remember when cartoons were only on Saturday mornings.
Grandma: Back then, kids spent their time outdoors riding their bikes and playing ball until the streetlights came on.
Michael: So why does she call them "the good old days"?

Cause they were kids, the older I get, more I realize what a great childhood I had.

No. These thing tend to cycle. So it’s likely that the kids of today will see their grandchildren playing outdoors and playing ball until the streetlights come on and realize what losers they were in their youth.

It’s not just the kids who are to blame, it’s the adults who have discouraged any kind of unorganized physical activity by children for fear 1) their precious offspring might suffer a few seconds of actual pain if something went wrong or 2) the parents of children who suffered physiical injury on their property would turn around and sue them for a fortune. So nowadays when you have “playgrounds” at all, they are often nothing more than a field of neatly trimmed grass, no swingsets, no jungle gyms, etc. so there is no possibility that any child might fall and get a boo-boo.

Sad commentary on our culture but all too true. Who could’ve imagined back then that they would have to do TV promotions to get kids outside to run, jump, play sports and ride bikes??

I remember when cartoons were only at the movie theaters, and there was at least one shown before every movie. I think Grandma is old enough to remember that too, but she forgot.
And there were the travelogs, news reels and shorts. Now all you get are ads.
