Our president and ex constitutional law professor has twice in one month failed to get what he wants from the Supreme Court. How can this be is not Obama brilliant, is he not wise, is he not good, is he not wonderful. Oh it must be racism. That’s it. Oh no it is not and no Obama is not brilliant, wise, wonderful or even good.
Spanish, not “Hispanics” were here in the west for over 200 years before English. Texas was a Republic because the U.S. backed their little war, they joined, then deserted the union, and Texans still have problems deciding whether to be Americans or Texans. The United States, NOT the individual states acquired through war or purchase, the land that is the western states. Spanish and Mexican land grants took priority over U.S. property rights granted in parts of the southwest.
The history of U.S. land law is interesting, and it’s amazing how “conservatives” are the ones who keep trying to re-write it in their favor. They depend on the ignorance of the people, which is why “conservative” education means blind trust in the “fact” the Earth is flat, and the sun revolves around us.
-Obama has used increased funding and enforcement to slow illegal immigration through our southern border to a trickle, but Mitt Romney and conservatives have responded with silence—or more attacks about a lack of border security._ If this happened under a Republican president, conservatives would be celebrating. But because it has happened under Obama, the reaction has been awkward silence—from liberals as well. The facts don’t fit the established narrative.
Jack: “Gringo” comes from the phrase in the song “Green grow the lilacs” that was popular and sung by American troops during their invasion of Mexico. (can’t recall which one off the top of my head.)

^Irish folk song, believe you’re right from what I’ve heard about the ORIGINAL lyrics. But “Americanized” also includes Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Florida, and Louisiana, original Spanish holdings??(among others)
Jack, why NOT go there? Joining the Confederacy was a “desertion” of a sort.
Dtroutma; as always you miss the point of the cartoon, which is simply the Governments position that the individual States have no right to enforce the laws currently on the books of the Federal Government. This has been the case since long before I was born, and will without a doubt be the case long after I’m gone. This cartoon has little if anything to do with potential votes, and more to do with a cheap labor force, which I have to say is encouraged by wealthy factory and or slaughter-house owners, of both political persuasions. And so long as Warren Buffet, Little Billie Gates, George Lukas, Oprha Winnfrey, Steven Spillberg, and most of the Hollyweird elite who are all mega-millionares and super supporters of our Dear Leader, then the problem remains that it’s the border States that have to foot the bill for the free E.R. medical care, education and provide the general welfare of the illegal immagrants. Regardless, these people (illegal aliens) whom the loony-libs all seem to believe ‘hide in the shadows’ simply do not hide, they live in the open, at least in Southern California where I was raised. So enough with the argument of who illegally owned what part of the southern boarder States, or who did not, that’s simply not the point of this cartoon.
James, didn’t miss the point at all, and yes, the court case IS about the fact that FEDERAL LAW always trumps STATE LAW. Scalia and the righties on the court are so far off base on this one, they aren’t even on the planet any more. Yes, the Confederacy violated the Constitution, AND their “obligations” as states, which was the “technical” reason for that little four year dust up.
The supreme court hasn’t made a decision on either case. Judging outcomes by looking at the questions asked is a fool’s game. Sometimes the judges are just looking for justifications for their decisions.
Expect split decisions in both cases with some parts thrown out and some kept. This is fairly standard and happens to laws pushed by either party.
Alas, Lynne, folk songs and “folk history”, it’s all Greek to me. (Actually, the first time the origin was explained to me, it came from a friend of “Mexican” ancestry. It’s like Santa Ana’s army being defeated at Montebello Bluffs by Pio Pico, and if you allude that it was “Santa Ana” being defeated by a minor force, the Texans get bent.)

Stopping illegal immigration is simple. (not easy, but simple) Prosecute anyone who hires illegals.
First offence = one night in jail, etc.

drtroutma: Perhaps you mean the song with a chorus “Green grow the rushes oh” by Robbie Burns?
