Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for June 03, 2012
Transcript:
NATE: It's pathetic, that's what it is. FRANCIS: What's pathetic? NATE: A dog getting chased up a tree by squirrels! Can you believe this! Unlike every other dog on the planet, Spitsy is squirrel-phobic! APparently he doesn't realize that the average squirrel is one tenth his size! Being afraid of a harmless animal like that is...is... Well it's ridiculous! It's embarrasssing! It's... FRANCIS: CAT! GAH! FRANCIS: You don't see the irony in this, do you? NATE: I have no idea what you're talking about.

Nate and Spitsy must not be aware of Ruthie & Joe’s dog, Willie. He’s scared of squirrels, too. But Willie is much smaller.

Nate’s comment rings true — he doesn’t know the meaning of “ironic/irony”!

I think it’s a matter of distance. When Nate’s a few yards away from Pickles, he can deal with it. But when Pickles, or any cat, is in very close proximity, Nate gets freaked out.

Come on, Nate. You’re scared of something smaller than you! That’s just sad! Then again, I’m scared of bugs and insects.

Are the Sunday strips set in a different universe than the dailies?

Why is Nate afraid of cats? It has almost no bearing on the actual story, it’s just a reason Francis gets on his nerves.

This one brings to mind the saying about talking the talk but not walking the walk …
Fun.
