Goat: Do you have any aspirations in life? Rat: I am a realist. And as a realist, I mock the lofty aspirations of other and maintain for myself but one simple goal. Goat: Which is what? Rat: To be so great that when I die, the world ends. Goat: Try humility. Rat: In the race for greatness, humility is a but a booby prize.

Sing along with Sherlock: “Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble… when you’re perfect in every way…”

Most of the self-styled “realists” I know have a very weak grasp on reality….

Or is that “buboes” prize, Mr Rat?
cdward over 12 years ago
The world will end for at least one person when Rat dies. Of course, that person will be Rat.

Rat: a legend in his own mind

Alas poor Rat, you are so vain to think yourself a realist when as a realist you would realize that no one will care about you once your gone and that you are extremely unimportant in the grand scheme of things
Peabody-Martini over 12 years ago
The truly scary part is that what Rat said about the world ending when he dies is almost a direct quote from Ayn Rand.

The race for greatness? Rat, you couldn’t even qualify for the team! You are a loutish, selfish, beer-swilling, petty bully. That’s realism!

Very finely drawn comic today, Pastis. I applaud you.
eddie6192 over 12 years ago
Definitely no booby prize for Rat, this time, ’cause he has no humility whatsoever.

Supposedly Emperor Vespasian’s last words were something like “I think I’m turning into a god.”

You can never win the Rat Race!

Good goal. The one thing i Really hate about dying is missing the stuff that will come around after I’m gone.

Okay.. quick question.. I need to find the pearls before swine treasuries where Mr. Pastis comments on his comics. which one is the most recent?
bmonk over 12 years ago
Funny. Humility comes from the root word for humus, earth. And rats are closer to the earth than most of us—so they should be humbler.
And it’s only the humble person who stands on the earth and knows it, and can do worthwhile and lasting things.

The prize is second base?

Small drunk and obnoxious, the hat trick of happiness. That’s realism.
