The driver resembles Barney Fife, a.k.a. Don Knotts.

Mason appears to be caricature of someone we would have recognized in 1948.

To me the driver resembles The Asp, Daddy Warbucks driver and sidekick. Mason resembles some crooked politician in NYC, I can’t remember his name. Al Capp often parodied well known real life characters.

Mason reminds me of the MAD Magazine poster boy—Alfred “What, me worry?” E. Newman.

I think the driver is simply someone supposed to look like the English actor James Mason. Capp was usually pretty direct about who he was parodying. https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_rn=4&gs_ri=psy-ab&tok=aTCL1x8noCexPWhmD23eGA&cp=10&gs_id=12&xhr=t&q=james+mason&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.42768644,d.dmQ&biw=1024&bih=653&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=4LQnUbD8GInl0gHzq4CACw

There we have it; the secret to the happy family life Capp never got growing up. Daisy is probably leaning on the tree that has the ’’I’ll never marry no girl but DaisyMae carved on it.’’.?Anyone know if Capp did better than how his father treated his mother?
