To me the driver resembles The Asp, Daddy Warbucks driver and sidekick. Mason resembles some crooked politician in NYC, I can’t remember his name. Al Capp often parodied well known real life characters.
I think the driver is simply someone supposed to look like the English actor James Mason. Mason appears to be caricature of someone we would have recognized in 1948.
