Frazz: It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Caulfield: I don't even like to visit there. Mr. Spaetzle: What are you talking about? New York? Las Vegas? Caulfield: The past. Mr. Spaetzle: The past is nice! Caulfield: Maybe for old people . Mine seems to be mostly busy work in stuffy classrooms while it's nice out.

As most people age, their memory of the past is selectively idealized. Caulfield isn’t old enough for that to have happened yet.

I wouldn’t relive my student days even if you paid me for it.

BTW, I read some place that the human mind tends to minimize and even forget the bad things in the past…..I think that’s why parents tell me how much fun it is to have kids……

The present isn’t so hot either.

Caulfield is experiencing the truth of Faulkner’s remark that ‘The past isn’t dead. It isn’t even past’.

The past is much better because I know what happened (I lived). The future is scary because I don’t know if I’ll live through it.

These’ll be the “good old days” for Caulfield when he gets a job and realizes he can’t treat his boss the way he treats Mrs. Olsen.

BIGPUMA: Are you for real? We already know you keep reading the strip even though you don’t like it, so you must just like being snarky (mostly eruditely, admittedly), but seriously, do you have any idea how truly petty this post makes you sound? This is a pathetic reach, even for you.
