Sometimes I’ve felt that Calvin is his father as a child and that Watterson draws himself as the father re-creating his life and childhood , that would make Calvins mom Wattersons wife . I don’t mind being wrong .
Normally, 3 heads are better than one — unless you’re Calvin 6:30 . . . Calvin 7:30 . . . and Calvin 8:30 . . . then NO work gets done no matter HOW many heads are involved!
@Smoocher, I think it’s pretty obvious that whoever Calvin and his dad are, Watterson really likes Calvin’s mom. She is rarely shown in anything but a good light, even when she looses it.
Hi DogsniffI think that this series would have seemed a lot funnier when it was originally read in the newspapers, as it was intended to be, in the days before online commenting was invented.I’ve noticed that when there is a long Calvin and Hobbes series on GoComics, and we are reading 50 to 100 comments every day on essentially the same topic, day after day, it begins to seem less funny and way too drawn out. But I think this is an illusion, because we are spending so much time dwelling on every day’s strip in a particular series that was intended more for pure entertainment during a few brief moments each day.But if I take a step back and just read over the strips one after another, without looking at the comments, personally I find this particular series to be ingeniously funny and clever (sort of like some of the comments that you come up with, which occasionally really crack me up). I also don’t find it to be tedious. There is sometimes some repetition from one day to the next, but if is often necessary for a cartoonist to do this in a series, in order to maintain the continuity.I think that Bill Watterson wrote some strips for us to ponder and really think about the deeper meanings, sometimes long after we had read them. But he wrote others for us to just enjoy each day as we were reading through the comic pages.Since GoComics is a social site and most of us are creatures of habit, we may tend to get into a pattern of commenting a similar amount each day, when in fact some of the strips deserve a tremendous amount of thought and commentary, while others deserve very little. On the other hand, when there is a long series that deserves very little deep thought, like this one, I think that it’s good that the group here gets onto some tangential topics, such as in-depth speculation about time travel, which Bill Watterson wasn’t trying to treat in such depth. It keeps the group going and often leads to a lot of clever humor and entertaining comments by the posters.Sometimes I deliberately post something more tangential on a “slow day,” when it looks to me like the strip won’t lead to much discussion, in order to provide some variety and sometimes humor for the group. I also think that posting other comic strips helps to add some variety and humor when a series gets long and most of the obvious comments have been exhausted.Oy Vey…… this is getting long. What I find funniest in the present series may be different from what other people laugh at. I think it’s hilarious when Calvin uses the term “Hobbeses” as though it is just a routine part of his language, in spite of the totally non-routine nature of what is happening. I also find it very funny when each Hobbes refers to the other Hobbes as simply “Hobbes,” without the 6:30 or 8:30 modifer tacked on, as though this is also totally routine. My guess is that you would also appreciate this type of humor, since your own humor often involves subtle nuances in the language.By the way, check the tail end of Saturday’s comments, because you received a very nice compliment from lin4869. You may not have seen it, since it was posted a day or so later. Also by the way, I would have congratulated you on being the first poster of the day, but I was just so insanely jealous that I couldn’t bring myself to do it.:>)
Mind, I still giggle over some of the facial expressions in the oldest Garfield, like the time Jon’s Granny gets the hot lemonade and the liniment rub mixed up when treated Garfield for a cold….
i have long been fascinated with the logic of time travel. say you go back in time and crash into your grandfathers car, killing him. ,you then, would never be alive, and therefore you would not be able to crash into the car. would the two cars eventually crash into each other?
@oronicle womble: I would read it, but it’s too late. Just kidding — thanks for the reply. There are a very small number of Garfields that I find to be pretty funny, but it seems like I have to read a very large quantity in order to find them. I still have my Garfield books, and I think some of the original strips were pretty funny at the time, but they are not as funny now in retrospect, since we have seen so many similar ones over so many years. This makes it hard for us now to appreciate Garfield’s originality when it first came out.
Dad is sitting in his easy chair, reading a book…Calvin: “You know, Dad, Election Day is coming up.”“Is that so?”“You’d better get your campaign in gear. Your approval rating as ‘Dad’ has now fallen to 2%, lower by far than any U.S. President who has ever been in office.”“I take solace in the fact that I have no competitors.”“Not much of a chance for you, Dad.”“Bedtime, kiddo.”

How is it that the 7:30 Calvin is smarter than the other two?

@Alain Harper,If (since) you have dibs on being the last person to get a cell phone, I’ll have to be the next to last one.

@rpmurray: The 7:30 Calvin just seems smarter, because the other two are suffering from jet lag.

Dilbert and I aren’t a whole lot alike, but in that strip I feel very much in his shoes.

Hi Puddleglum. I thought of you when I wrote that joke yesterday.

…or the other two should put their glasses down over their eyes and they might see who’s the dumb one (unless who’s still on first)!

Liar. You are TOO being critical. Go back to your pithy one liners yourself. I like pith! (and vinegar:—)
