My sympathy and prayers go out to the all the people of Minnesota who have experienced damage to their homes in the horrific floods. I’ve just read about it on the Archmax website.
that is all cable news from fox, cnn, and msnbc. they spent 5 minutes on a piece on how to say 2010. is it 2000 and 10 or 20, 10 or 2010…not very informative.
I get a more honest appraisal of the news from Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert than the mainstream news media. Sadly, they are comedians, not journalists.
More than likely Calvin is watching MSNBC. Always cracks me up how liberals attack Fox news just because it refuses to follow the liberal party line like the rest of the “mainstream” media & MSNBC.
…what I don’t like are two opposing opinions going head to head, and their idea of “debate” is that whoever can scream down their opponent is the winner….has nothing to do with actual intelligent argument…whatever happened to real debate???
I am amazed at how Bill Waterson knew 20 years ago how to start disagreements among his readers about the virtues(or lack thereof) of FOX and MSNBC news……
Sadly, no. The strip you reference is from June 7, 1986, and we are currently viewing ones from 1992. Thanks for finding it, that was the one, Always makes me think of my only childhood.
Wow people, drop the Fox vs MSNBC arguments – they’re both crap, they both put a heavy spin on the news (one hard right, the other heavily liberal, in the sense Americans use the term), and both edit clips in support of their spin (there’s always editing going on, but real news shouldn’t use it to distort the the message). If one relies heavily on either for their news, you really are just getting infotainment, emphasis on the entertainment.
Which is the whole point of this 20-some year old strip – TV news in general is insubstantial and shallow, and we were well on the road to today’s dreck even then.
That’s all for which Calvin has the patience. As long as the TV is suspended in midair, Calvin could ‘take a stand’ against the tripe that’s emanating from it.
“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book”.Groucho Marx.
While I love the quote . . . I find it extremely ironic coming from someone who spent a majority of his life making a living performing in movies and on television!!!!! ;-)
No 6-year-old I’ve ever met in my life seems to have the attention span longer than that of a gnat . . . unless, of course, there’s some inane cartoon like SpongeBob SquarePants on t.v. at the time — then they’re absolutely mesmerized by it from the moment it comes on until the time it goes off!
Meanwhile, it never ceases to amaze and delight me how Calvin’s television always seems to defy the laws of gravity the way it does! I’m sure Sir Isaac Newton would be absolutely astounded if he knew about at the laws of cartoon physics! ;-)
My family got rid of our cable network a while back because we felt like it was taking over our lives. Now I get all my news from NPR and the Washington Post. I find myself feeling much better informed this way, not to mention healthier and smarter.

Nowadays they take the book from you and tell you to get back in there and watch the television and stop being elitist.

Judging from the symbols coming from the TV, maybe it’s Anderson Cooper snapping at the photo-snapping airline passenger.
