Dali even more so. I once heard a recording of an interview in which he said, that in order to call attention to himself he was willing to throw himself headfirst down the stairs. If you want to see ugly, expensive “art,” check out Tapies. He was paid thousands for a gigantic “sculpture” of a dirty sock with a hole in it.
yesterday’s Steve Allen mention:@JohnnyDiegothe show mentioned WAS in the sixties, AFTER his stint as the original tonight show host. It was on ABC, I believe , just as I said opposite Johnny Carson.look it up.
Agreed, collectibles collect dust.My mother in law collected, as I recall, Avon bottles in the 70s and 80s. Great collectibles. Only problem was, 5 to 10 years later, found there was such a glut of them that they were worthless!
“Art” is something you know when you see or hear it. It’s very subjective. Put a nude photo in a gallery and it’s dubbed “art.” Same photo in a glossy magazine and it’s dubbed “porn.” Context is a lot. But, as Red Green once said: “If I can do it, it ain’t art!”
@Dogsniff:Would have had you covered, but I stopped at the blog first to double-check the reference, and- well, you know how easy it is to get sidetracked.
So, if people see something in Kinkade’s art that reminds them of a time when things were simpler, cleaner, and more peaceful, this baffles you, and makes you call “crap” what others see as refreshing and soothing. There is something else you haven’t figured out: One man’s crap is another man’s art. It’s not your opinion of Kinkade’s art that is baffling, but how one supposed artist would insult those who see something in it that gives them a warm comfortable feeling.
Artists are made, if folks buy enough of your stuff to make you, so they can tell their friends they have a piece of your “expertise”. Jackson Pollack comes to mind. Does he look like Rembrandt ( who would turn over in his grave)?

all “fine” art was once commercial art

And that, boys, is what kept QVC in business all these years.
(and QVC stands for Quite a Volume of Crap.)

Dog! What would Teresa say about that? It’s one thing to DO it; something else to air it out in public.

Considering how many people consider Thomas Kinkade and Norman Rockwell to be fine art, live and let live seems to be the best policy here.

Yet another bit of evidence that Watterson, though cynical in a sometimes over-wrought way, was also spot on!

I enjoy reading Calvin even though he speaks like an adult.
