The badges of being a kid…remnants of fall leaves clinging to your hair, earth and mud under your fingernails, tiny scratches and pricks from branches and close encounters with the neighbors hedges, a mosquito bite red and puffed from scratching and scraped kneecaps smudged in grass and dirt.
Mornin’ all! Got tired of just reading your comments and decided to join up. I spent my girlhood summers in Ithaca, NY climbing trees, fishing, rockhounding, roller-skating and falling down a lot on our slate and cement sidewalks (with those diabolical flat metal skates that clipped onto your shoes and always fell off – only one thin leather strap on the back to go up and around your ankle, Snoopster! – and you tightened the clips with a skate key). My brother and I had pocket knives from about age 10 and onward – mine was a green-handled Girl Scout knife and I STILL HAVE IT at age 57 1/2!!! I still have a knife in my hip pocket most of the time, too … Speaking of grass stains: I’ve noticed that I don’t get them any more, even though I work on my knees in flowerbeds and such. Guess I’ve learned how to move without rubbing my jeans on the grass!
And if you have green knees and bright yellow pants you might have been playing some serious golf, especially from checking the lie on those money putts….
My knees are greenish…was crawling around playing with 2-yr old granddaughter…first they were red, then blue, then black, now green…tomorrow yellow….bruises. Too old of a body to do this, too young of a heart not to.

You’re right, not much grass in the big cities. City kids end up with more cuts, scabs, and bruises on their knees. All of which are badges of honor.

On the other hand, if your knees are green and you haven’t been out in the grass, you may need medical attention!

@Hobbes,Snoopy is winnowing the grass, but he’s going against the grain! The way Snoopy tosses grass is for the birds!

Five days ago, Calvin wanted another kind of ‘green’ from collecting Captain Steroid comic books!
