    All people have to work hard on themselves for not to sin. We have all the same problem. We must become holy but we are not born holy!

    I’m 73 and I’ve never used the word “shtick” in a sentence and yet six-year-old Calvin uses it so casualy. Is “shtick” originally a Yiddish word? If so, I should be ashamed of myself since Yiddish was my father’s first language.

    Calvinl, you should know by now, messing with Suzie doesn’tpay. Much like trying to bath a cat or get a pill down it when itdoesn’t want you to, even if you succeed it can end up beingmore than your life is worth. As here….

    It’s what modern society is peddling, whether it be religion, politics or other human interactions. As long as the word is believed, the user gets away with it even without sincerity. But, do we become a society of synics and pass judgement on every transgressor or except the few who abuse the system as collateral damage? If I sounded preachy…I’m sorry :)

    Au contrere!Christianity isn’t peddling fake remorse or fake repentance.Calvin’s genuine remorse needs work, as does his motivation.

    There’s penance because you know you did wrong. And penance because of fear of the punishment you merit. Calvin wants Susie to believe that his is the former. But, if he’s penitent at all, it’s heavily skewed toward the latter.

    Sorry one gets caught is not true repentance. Sorry one has done wrong is. Big difference and working in the criminal justice system in my prime showed me lots of Calvin’s behavior today. BTW the word repentance has within it’s meaning to turn around and go the other way.

    But isn’t that the reality for all us imperfect humans… we all need to work on our repentance so that it’s not just “shtick” but a genuine movement of the heart? We iknow that we are not as genuinely “sorry” as we might be…

    “I hope everybody realizes that Calvin’s attitude is exactly what Christianity is peddling.”

    +++++

    Not Christianity. Many Christians do “get it,” and sincerely repent of the mess they’ve made of their lives, and look to God to help them become better people, persons they can be at peace with.
