My father in law’s cows have dozens of acres to roam on at will.

Cows eating grass are sustainable, and ecologically efficient, cows eating corn in a feed lot are not. Also, corn feeding causes the high digestive acidity that leads to E-coli food poisoning. Animal products require 10 times the food calories to produce as the food value you get from eating them. This is fine if the animal eats stuff you can’t eat anyway, like grass, and that grows where it is difficult to plant stuff you can eat (like grass again).

As confirmed by numerous animal and human (China) studies, as consumption of animal products increases from 5% to 40% of calories, cancer and heart disease risk quadruples. Vegans have their own problems, but the rest of us would all be much better off simply eating less meat and other animal products. Like on feast days (including Sunday) only – like in the old days.
