“That wicked cesspool known as capitalism”?

Where did you learn that, Agnes? From your teacher, your priest, or your mother? Capitalism is the economic system based on freedom and the protection of individual rights. As such it is the only moral system. You want a cesspool? Try North Korea, Cuba, Somalia, etc.

Capitalism, a wicked cesspool – and the Emperor’s New Clothes. How fitting!

Lovecraft! Yes! I was trying to remember the name of H.P. Lovecraft the other day and couldn’t do it. One less thing to worry about today.

As for cesspools, the more socialist a country is, the deeper they are in $hit.

If the water is buggy, it must have flowed through GoComics on Sunday…..

Lotta bugs in the whole system that day.

As for capitalism….. funny, I didn’t even take her remark as ideological.

Reading the comments, I can understand how one might…but I took it as a humorous slam on the intricacies, questionable practices and secret dealings presumed, especially by the squeamish, to be needed in order to get ahead in the climate of business.

It’s a rather Victorian notion, the idea that a lady’s dainty, white-gloved hands should be kept above such common filth …but Agnes has absorbed a lot of Victorian notions…and from literature, not from Grandma or her teachers.

“Capitalism is the economic system based on freedom and the protection of individual rights.” -Not necessarily. A fair definition is “an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods”. In times past people within that definition have owned slaves, enslaved women, sent children into deadly mines, had laws changed to give them property owned by others. Decent treatment is not assured.Protection of individual rights is not assured.-“Al Capone is a fine example of unregulated capitalism.”-What Capone did was not based on capitalism but rather the fact that doing illegal things brings in money. On the other hand, it isn’t completely wrong because he used money (or capital) to produce products others were willing to pay for.-“Capitalism is the system where the rich get richer on the hard labor of the poor.”-Although some do, the system does not require it. For example, people do not have to be rich to practice the system of using the money they have to produce some goods or services others are willing to pay for. -Buying a shoe shine kit to earn money shining shoes is an example of capitalism. Buying seed and fertilize to raise a crop to sell is another example of capitalism. Paying actors, cameramen, writers, all the other folks involved in making movies is also an example of capitalism. The workers may work hard or just put in a cameo appearance for $5 million as Brando did in Superman.-Note that the movie might flop, the crop might not grow or people might not buy it, folks might not want their shoes shined, may not buy bootleg whiskey. Getting rich is not assured. Staying rich is not assured.

“by a certain number of the 1%”-Some members of a group have done things we don’t like so we attack the group. A black man committed a crime yesterday somewhere, certain blacks are criminals. (and he was part of the 99%)A coach molested a child, certain coaches are child molesters. (and he was a part of the 1%)-Attack the group for what some members of the group have done?-Let’s see what Agnes does when she becomes a one percenter.
