I remember in the first Christopher Reeve “Superman” movie Clark stopped by a telephone booth just like that when he was about to go to the emergency. (It was the George Reeves series when he changed in a walk-in booth, right?)
It’s been a while, high school maybe, or a few years after I graduated in 1971. Also haven’t seen a pay phone anywhere that I can remember in many years, let alone an actual phone booth.
Last time I used one was 1994. After Navy boot camp the company commander recommended we all tape a quarter to the back of our ID card so we could always call a cab in an emergency. Last time I saw a pay phone it was fifty cents to make a call.
way too long…but probably about 10 years ago when I was driving from Texas back to Minnesota and I had no bars even though my phone was charged…there are spots in Arkansas/Missouri where there is just no T-Mobile access I guess…
2001…before I had my cell phone, I had a pager, for work and home, paged for work I had to find the nearest pay phone call the office and find out what was up. Got the cell phone when my usual pay phones started disappearing.
in the 90’s. i used a scrap of newspaper to wipe off the ear-hole and when i was done it looked like a paper sack that had been used to carry egg rolls.

It’s been a long time since I’ve even seen one of those – unless it’s in the the movies that were made before the turn of the century.

Pay phones are around, you just have to look for them.Make a game of it while you’re out and about.
