“Lambseatoatsanddoeseatoatsandlittlelambseat ivy..” is a fun old song . My mom sang it to me;I sang it to my sons; and now sing it to my grandsons. It brings a smile every time!
Crane stole that line from Victor Borga. Part of his act dating from the early 1950’s “I know two pieces, one’s clair de lune, and the other one isn’t. clair de lune, English translation clear the slaoon.”
My dad (about Earl’s age) taught us “Magdalena Kagdalena, Whoops Donna Wonna Honna Mogen Logan Dogan Was Her Name” (spelling may not be right), and “I Want a Beer Just Like the Beer That Pickled Dear Old Dad”
Actually, he’s misquoting U.S. Grant, who was notoriously tone deaf and often said he could only distinguish two songs from each other. “One of them is Yankee Doodle and the other one isn’t.” Grant said. He never elaborated on what the other song was, leaving people to speculate that it was either all the other songs in the world lumped together or something to ribald to be mentioned in polite company.
My father-in-law was giving his grand-daughter the business about her taste in music when I reminded him that song was popular when he was young. He hushed right up.
When I first read the lyrics I didn’t know the song till I ran the words together and thought “OH, that song!” Like finding out In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was really In the Garden of Eden or the lyrics to Island Girl or Louis Louis.

Earl’s not into music, Nelson.

Earl sings tenor solo – ten or twelve miles away and so low, no one can hear him.

He stole that line from Ulysses S. Grant ! Except that Grant said “Yankee Doodle” was the one of the two songs he knew that he knew the name of.

Not to rain on the parade, but BC should have googled the lyrics first.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) I can remember when that song was new during the 1940s.
