Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for August 26, 2012
Transcript:
Dill: I had a dream about my kiddie car last night. Beni: Did it turn into a horse? Could it fly? Did it go real fast? Did it turn into an elephant? Was it a talking elephant? Beni: Did the horn really work? Did it turn into a real car? Did you give me a ride? Did you drive to the North Pole? Or to the Moon? Or to my Grandma's? Dill: I have all the wrong dreams.

I’ve heard that Richard Thompson is retiring because of a disease. When is that going to happen?

I think I’ve had the same dreams, Dill. I always seemed to be falling off a cliff or something.

On August 17th, 2012, it was announced Thompson would end the strip on September 23rd, 2012, in order to focus on his health.2 (Wikipedia)

Last time I rode my kiddie car (about 57 years ago) the neighbors dog almost killed me.

Alas, Dill, your dream was far too real for their happy fantasies…. Maybe you should have said “nightmare.”

I just hope that when they start the reruns, we’re not bombarded with folks who complian “this strip ran in October 1998”.

Well, it’s been a good run these 5 years I have been reading this strip. I was going to leave it starting Monday, like what television does with its daily programs in the fall (always starting on a Monday). But since the ending date for this comic will be Sunday, Sept 23, I’ll going stay with this comic until its true sign-off date. I already have a replacement for CDS called Freshly Squeezed which is second in linefollowing CDS and just before Gasoline Alley in my Go Comics line-up. When CDS departs on 9/23/12, it be first in my lineup. Thank you so much for five years of family fun, Richard.

Dill I thought your dream looked cooler that anything Alice brought up. Looks like his kiddie car trip was universal.

I’m going to miss Alice and the rest of the kiddies! And Miss Bliss.

Michael J. Fox is coming back to television. We will all keep you in our prayers Richard, that you may return to what you do best and enjoy, one day very soon as well.

The second panel reminds me of the Shel Silverstein collection “Where the Sidewalk Ends.”

These are all valid questions, Alice—however not for Dill!
MysteryCat about 12 years ago
So will I. It will be third in my required classics viewing, after Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts.
And always hoping Richard will return with new adventures for the Otterloops.
PoodleGroomer about 12 years ago
He left the block and went exploring to Where the Sidewalk Ends.

You don’t beat Parkinson’s. If we truly want to honor Thompson, we need to support Parkinson’s research and treatment. Alice says so!
