Music while you are on hold is bad, but not as bad as commercials for the company you are calling. Once, years ago, I called a place whose hold sound was—silence, except that every ten seconds or so, you would hear a couple of soft musical chimes. I thought this was great, you didn’t have some annoying noise blaring away in your ear, but the chimes reassured you that you hadn’t been accidentally disconnected. But that was the only time I encountered that. Best solution I’ve found, get a speaker phone so you can do something else while you are waiting and the noise isn’t so intrusive.
One time I drove my dad to a large craft store and waited while he shopped. The music they played was a single lite jazz song that rose to a crescendo in the middle, with equal time for a loud and a quiet section, but otherwise was a loop with no beginning or end. I figured they must be playing phone hold music by mistake. It was starting to drive me crazy.

Several times I enjoyed the music while on hold but, unfortunately, the service representative couldn’t tell me the music’s title.
