People complain about grammar-Nazis, but the reality is that when a person has poor grammar they do themselves no favors. My favorite example is from a friend who received a resume that stated the applicant would like to work in “a fast paste environment.” No interview for that guy. He could have used a grammar-Nazi looking over his shoulder.
I can tolerate bad spelling on this forum, but when i see an article on-line and a hired writer misspells something, then I cringe. They wrote about Prince William’s manners regarding a facial expression he was emulating. The writer spelled manners, manors. I read that and thought, are we talking about his homes or the face he made?
NOW Earl is being the “reasonable” one? They seem to take turns.
in response to phyllis bear’s “U.” Part of my employment is at an airline reservatons call center and when we agents give people their confirmation codes over the phone, we use the standard or military phonics spelling system, giving the examples of “D as in Delta and B as in Bravo” so these similar sounding consonants can be distinguishable across the phone lines. It’s funny when people try to imitate us without standardization, the wild examples they will come up with. The other day, a lady was telling me “U as in You….” Y would she do that? Maybe she was telling me “U as in U.” Either way, it was laughable.

The couch would sound good to me. I doubt Earl would get enough sleep in bed. YAP, YAP, YAP, YAP, YAP……

The one that cracks me up (since I’m a car nut) is “wreckless driving”-the unintentional irony, it burns…

I take great pride in being a closet grammar-nazi and am flummoxed by an iPad that persists in correcting all my spelling Southernisms!

I agree with Bdaysuit, but the overuse of apostrophes bugs me also.

You’re, your…2 different words, 2 different meanings, but used interchangeably. It kills me every time.

I think Opal opening her mouth annoys Earl, and the same when the roles are reversed. Has this strip gotten more caustic as the years go by?

Yes, everyone should have free reign — oops, I mean free rein — to write however they want.

What kills me is when someone sends a text and uses one & two letter words. Spell it out!
Storm F-1/4 about 12 years ago
You are just fine my friend. Whenever I can’t understand someone I just make up words. It makes for a more interesting conversation!

Even the redoubtable New York Times recently put “arm and arm” rather than “arm in arm.” Shudder.
