Okay, I am a university graduate who graduated SCL (highest latin honors level, evidently the “Banned” word list dosn’t appreciate Latin). But I needed the special education myself in my early teens to adjust to the regular classroom when I didn’t have the skills or medication for the ADHD.
What really surprises me is that they call it “special ed”. I thought by the 1980s and 90s the approved euphemism for children who were mostly mainstreamed was “resource room”.
As a parent of a child with developmental difficulties, the entire tone of this story line is painting a picture of special ed being a bad thing. It makes me so angry. The hallway shouldn’t be dark, the attitude should be positive, and it’s perpetuating the myth that being different is bad or undesirable.
It’s not clear to me, is he doing extra class work here, or is he correct that the other teacher has permanently gotten rid of him? Being “special tracked” right out of a normal education isn’t an optimal way to deal with students with special needs.
Ugh! Terrible memories of having to go to speech therapy in elementary school. The teacher would actually announce in class that it was time for my therapy and I would have to listen to the other kids snicker as I got up and walked out. I don’t know why she didn’t just give me a dunce cap and make me an even bigger target.

There was a stigma attached to that room back in the 50’s and 60’s. Is it still there today?

The artwork here is very realistic. Nicely done!

Just confirmation that he truly is special. Like we all are in one way or another.

Well, the sign appears to be spelled correctly. I wonder how Kevin sees it.

The walk of shame. It may really help Kevin, but it’s going to cause a lot of embarrassment in the meantime.

I love some of these story arcs. This one is fairly touching. As far as Kevin goes.

The artwork is not conjuring up ominous music for me… I’m hearing the theme from “Get Smart”.
