So, the upper half of today’s side-splitter is the art from this past Thursday’s strip cut-and-pasted (with new paint job on the cars behind the bus) and altered from three panels to two. Very economical. And all just to give readers further insight into how the title character is a thoughtless cur who enjoys making other people suffer. Good to know.

Where — even in Ohio — do they have such one-lane roads?

Is that the only kid whose parents didn’t drive him to school last year? Looks like Ed might have more than one student this year, unless those are just mannequins he threw in the back. Which is something he would do so that it looked like he was working while he drove around píssing off everyone on the road.

But would it beat the Guiness record?

Interesting how the artistic [sic] team of Batiuk-Ayers-Davis (which I notice abbreviates to B-A-D) puts such great care into drawing the bus, right down to the rivets over the windshield, but then gives us slapdash generic East German blobs for the cars.

In his blog, Batty is teasing a big award-bait arc about “the Burnings™” beginning in the fall of 2024. Meanwhile, in today’s strip, Crankshaft—both the character and the comic—are going nowhere. Seems appropriate.

Ed is a grump, pure and simple, always was, always will be. That is why he is so lovable.

Why do I get the feeling that today’s strip should have immediately followed this one:

I never deliberately trapped other vehicles behind my rig, but when construction narrowed I-15 to one lane going up the Virgin River Gorge and I had a heavy load, I did make a point of counting them when the road widened and they could all finally pass me. My record was 27.
