They’ll soak while being washed sufficiently. Glasses, cups and mugs first (not one by one), plates after that, less filthy first. Cutlery after that, then pots and pans. I prefer to wash plastic last if the water’s still hot enough, otherwise extra. And careful with anything that had contact with raw fish, poultry or other meat etc.
Soaking is smelly and yucky and makes only sense if something is burnt. Try baking soda.

I rarely minded doing the dishes, primarily because my younger brother would ghost out of the chore leaving me blissfully alone and at peace.

The longer dishes soak, the easier (and less soap it takes) to clean them. simple chemistry.
