Usually by now (1:00 a.m. Central Time), there are about 10 comments.

Today, there are only 4 and 2 of them are mine.

This new team is doing such a fine job, it is hard to find something to say except that the reader’s are very happy with the new dick tracy.

Texas Garcia would be Tracy’s version of Texas Guinan?

The unfortunate effect of the colorization makes it unclear what is happening. Have the Fifty and the Pouch traded a grey object and a blue object, in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War? If the Fifth is handing the Pouch some money, the crayonistas should have made it green.

I would hate to be the cop who had to search the Pouch. Would they need a special warrant for that?

Man, Texie dates from the early 1930’s. She was ” Big Boy’s” moll.

I’m not sure what’s going on either, but I also think it’s the color that’s confusing us. The B&W version leaves you with the impression that Fifth handed something to Pouch and Pouch is putting it away. The color version looks like Fifth has a gray object and Pouch has a blue one. But it doesn’t look like a bill. It looks more like a pouch of some kind that Pouch is putting into his pouch. Boy that’s confusing. Maybe it’s a wad of bills.

Agreed, in B&W it looks to me like it could be a bundle of money. It definitely gets lost here.

Color issues aside I don’t think I have ever seen the Pouch look so good,

The build up in this story has been terrific but I am really interested in seeing how the new team handles action.

Hey is anyone interested in sharing how old they were and what story line was going on when they first discovered Dick Tracy in the comics?

The Pouch is one of my top ten favorite villains. Hopefully Johnny Scorn will come back too, although Pouch did kill him.

This is really great! The artwork is fantastic and the way the story is moving along makes you want to check in and see what happens next. It’s nice to see creators with a respect for the classic Tracy do this strip so well.

Yeah, but maybe Johnny got better. I’m hoping for a return of Molene, Ugly Christine, and Bribery (they never did show us or find the bodies)

punchydugan, I was 6 or 7 when I first discovered DT. Altough it wasn’t the strip originally, I got into it from reruns of ARCHIE’S TV FUNNIES (not to be confused with the Dick Tracy show). I remember only watching it for the D.T. segments. Unfourantly, my local paper didn’t carry the strip. Then, as luck would have it, while visiting my aunt i found out her paper did. She would actually save the comics for me. Then during a usual monthly visit bring them to me. I would put them in order, with help from dad (who was reading them also), and just read and marvel at Tracy’s adventure. I can’t remember what the storyline was, but, I know it was during the Collins & Fletcher era. Ever since I’ve been hooked!

My pleasure Det.DanDone and thanks for sharing. I too remember the Archie TV Funnies show and only watched it for the Dick Tracy (and those flying buckets) segment. My first exposure to Tracy was with the Mr. Magoo episode from the early 60s. I started reading Dick in the Sunday paper around 1970 or 71. I don’t remember the plot but I believe Tracy was pretending to be blind. My dad was always telling me how great the strip was when he read the “funnies” as a kid but truth to tell, I was never all that impressed with the strip until DC comics put out an oversized oneshot of the Flat Top story from the 1940s. That just blew me away and I started searching out reprints of the older strips. I hope I don’t make too many enemies by saying that the current team is the best I have ever seen the modern strip looking since I stated reading it .

WOW talk about seeing the golden age first hand!! Alley Oop was another strip my dad was always telling me about. He would tell me about his loyal dinosaur friend Dinny, saying you did’nt mess around with Ally Oop when Dinny was around. Never got the chance to read it though. No paper in Cincinnati carried it by my time. BTW Det.Dan, sounds like you had a terrific Aunt.

Great topic! So far this current story is really cool. I was first introduced to Tracy through those SAturday morning Archies TV Funnies also, but soon after, my mom bought me DC’s Limited Collector’s Edition of Dick Tracy featuring the original Gould strips with the first Flattop appearance also introducing Vitamin Flintheart. What a great way to start on Tracy!

I always loved to read and although I know I was reading earlier the first strip that made the biggest impression on me was the 52 gang in 1962. I was 11 then. I sure would like to see them again but it would have to be siblings bent on revenge because they were all killed.

It;s ok to bring back old rogues since DT is starting over a new fresh strip. I love it. Can;t wait to see old Prune Face and Flattop again!

I started being fascinated with comic strips in the mid to late 40’s. The Sunday comics were always the cover of the Sunday papers and many papers were sold because of the “funnies.” Mumbles, Pear Shape, BO Plenty were some of the story lines I recall.

I too, flipped over DT with that DC oversize … why did I ever get rid of it ? !

I also have an ARCHIE dvd with 4 episodes of DT !

I’m new around here and I must say the discussion is always lively, and more importantly, civil. BTW, how old are all you guys; I’m 46.

i started reading Tracy in 1958 with the Miss Egghead story.. and began reading the Harvey comics reprints with the Flattop Junior storyline around the same time.

My uncle introduced me to Dick Tracy early on. But I can’t recall what strips I first started reading. I have a faint memory of sorts, that it may have been one of the old Big Little books (no I’m not THAT old :).

But I know that I really started getting into Tracy with the Blackthorne, and other comic reprints. Today I have nearly all of the Blackthorne, and Gladstone reprints

I’m also eagerly collecting the Complete Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy Dailies & Sundays books. (Thanks to this particular web site, for alerting me to them.) I’m at number 7 now, and should be caught up this year. If anyone hasn’t tried them yet, get them. They’re far superior to any reprint I’ve seen so far. I just hope they catch us fans up to the current strips; especially the 70s which I’ve seen only fragments.

It’s good to see the new team on the strip. You guys have done more than any other since Collins for this strip.

As I recall, Ugly Christine was incinerated when fell out of Tracy’s hover tube and into a smoke stack. Bribery, as I recall was standing on the prison roof when something from the sky fell on him sending him into the floor.

If yo look at panel 2 closely when Pouch opens his pouch, it says snap. If he upgraded to velcro wouldn’t is go “frrippp!”?

It is nice to read all these comments and reminisce about the older strips. I have been off and on reading the Dick Tracy strip for many years now.

The Pouch wasn’t the only one to escape justice…
