I am close to someone who, at 96, is legally blind even with glasses, deaf even with hearing aids, and upset that no one… family, friends, doctor, etc….. will let her drive any more.
She told me she thinks she’s just as safe behind the wheel as sitting on her couch, because it’s just the same activity (???)… and about two years ago got a ticket for 45 mph in a 25 mph residential zone.
I also have a very good friend who is only 65, and drives 45 on the freeway (speed limit 65, average speed probably 70) “to be safe.”
She insists that if people don’t like it they can go around her.
Both are still somewhat miffed at me because in the last few years I’ve refused to let either drive me anywhere.
What do you do when someone you care about is a menace on the road and can’t tell… and won’t believe it?
I only hope that when the day comes that I shouldn’t drive any more, someone will tell me…and I’ll listen.
