My last dog, gone several years now, loved the ball fetch game. If you did not want to play, he would drop the ball inside a deep, basement window well or down an open concrete block wall. He would then bark incessantly until someone came and retrieved the ball. Later he taught himself to roll the ball down the stone stairs leading from the raised back yard to the lower back deck. He then chased and retrieved the ball again and again.
Our Ember has a weird fascination with grocery bags. We store them on the floor of the pantry to be repurposed as trash bags. She will lay on the floor, slide her paw under the door, and pull them out. She won’t do anything with them once she gets them, just pulls them out.
My dog (7 months) will roll things underneath desks and beds where he can’t reach, then reach for and stare at and whine at them until someone helps him get it out. Then he’s back to happily chewing on it for a few minutes… until he drops it under there again, because he didn’t move away from the desk or bed.
Dutchess (Sheppard/Sheltie Collie mix) would drop the ball from the top of the stairs, then run after it. Yet if you threw the ball for her she would get it, bring it back to you stopping just a bit away from your outstretched hand, and get you to chase her to get the ball back.

Delayed satisfaction is still satisfaction. Better that than the Mick Jagger version.

I love to watch the contortions our cats go through trying to retrieve a toy from under something

Sophie’s humans are a little slow to catch on! (In the comic strip, anyway.)
