Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for February 22, 2012
Transcript:
Alex: Gram! Joanie: Everything okay, dear? Alex: Yes! He says he wants to discuss it in person, and that he wants to ask me, not the other way around. Joanie: Great. Can I get back in the car now? Alex: In a sec, Gram. I have to say goodbye. No, I love you more... wrong. I love you more... no, dude...

When Gram gets back in the car, she is going to smack some sense into Alex.

How about asking for him to call the State Hyway Patrol for help. Duh… Or maybe she could if her head was screwed on tight.

Anybody who goes out into a blizzard when there’s a risk of being stranded is an idiot.

So WHY doesn’t Alex go outside if she wants some privacy?

Where’s Joanie’s cell phone?

New Haven to Framingham, 12 hours in April. Smart enough at least to take I-95 to I-495. Went over Mass Pike and cars were stranded every where. Heard they had to take people to HJ on snowmobiles.

Diabetic wife and 5 month old baby. Not so smart after all.

Obviously this strip takes place somewhere in a normal New England winter, not the one we actually have…

It’s a good thing it’s going to be 58 degrees here in MA today, or I’d really be worried about Joanie.

Grandma needs to get warm, and THEN warm up a certain part of Alex!

Having lived in the northern states for many years, I’m enjoying this story line. The comments, though, are a different matter. I encountered the words “idiot” and “stupidity”, and I wonder why we have to be so judgemental.

I’m so happy!!!!!! love them both, and they love eachother. :0)
Potrzebie over 12 years ago
If they polled all the mooks stranded in blizzards I wonder what would be their excuse for going out?
Packratjohn Premium Member over 12 years ago
Well, there’s a huge difference between doing something that is considered stupid, and actually being stupid. One does not preclude the other, neither does it assure it.

big difference between being stupid and being naive.

What about respecting your elders? Elder abuse!
Alex is one selfish girl in my book. You go sit in a snow bank, young lady!

What has apparently become lost in all of this is that “Gram” is supposed to help Elizabeth Warren’s election campaign. “For want of a nail, the shoe was lost …” With clueless juniors like Alex around, it’s probably just as well that the younger generation doesn’t vote (at least that’s becoming the case in Canada).

where would we be without negative projection?
marzipANn over 12 years ago
Gram should speak up and tell Alex to call for help while her cell phone still works.

Larry, that was the ’97 storm, right?

“Anybody who goes out into a blizzard when there’s a risk of being stranded is an idiot.”
I guess that would be me, when I went out twice into some of the worst blizzard conditions I’ve ever seen, having grown up in PA, MA & NJ, lived in CO for many years, during the blizzard of ‘82 to go with a friend who’s daughter was seriously ill to get her medications. Walking home the last time, after abandoning our vehicle because the road was totally blocked by other abandoned vehicles, I couldn’t tell my house from the others except by counting them as I went down the street, where the snow was a little less deep, only up to my thighs. I’m 6’2".
Since I was wearing my winter climbing gear, the same stuff I wore when I went climbing fourteeners in winter here, I wasn’t concerned. People who are terrified of snow just don’t know how to deal with it, like dressing appropriately. It’s the same with racing motorcycles in the dessert or spelunking. If you like that sort of thing, dangerous things, then it’s wise to be properly prepared. If you’re afraid of them, avoid them. But I have some great memories of pushing the limits with some great guys, and I have the scars to prove it, and I’m still here bouncing my grandchildren on my knee.

I hate the “love you more” schtick. It’s bull hockey. Either you love or you don’t; if you have to measure your love, it ain’t love.

When my ex-girlfriend and I got stuck in the “I love you more” loop, I’d end it by saying “I guess I’m just more loveable.”
(And no, that’s not WHY she’s my ex-girlfriend.)
summerdog86 over 12 years ago
It is possible that Alex’s phone battery will die while she’s trading “love yous” and that means no rescue for her and Gram for a while. It would make for a longer storyline.

Could anyone spare a minute to send an “inserting picutres into comments for dummies”? Enjoy reading your all’s comments!

Can anybody see that the phone will run out of power before the patrol gets called?

I will be SO SAD with Garry retires. That will be a black day indeed. He’s given me more belly laughs than everyone else combined.

Whew, that darn Trudeau really had us going. Good thing Leo didn’t say, “I would Alex, but your mom is too darn cccrazy”. Assuming the face to face goes well, I nominate babka for flower girl.
Can you imagine the bachelorette party the mother’s-in-law can put together? It’ll be more creative if JJ’s in charge. I’m sure GT’ll do em justice.
Hmmm, never seen a Doonesbury character post a comment before.

Thanks, John. I went to the link you gave and wound up with
(only it wouldn’t let me copy that from the link, so I had to write it down and type it)
Don’t know what to do with it – I told you I needed something for dummies! Will see what the gocomics tech’s come up with. Appreciate your trying! ♥

Wouldn’t even enter it when I typed it. Sheesh.

It wouldn’t be a tragedy if this series results in a “blizzard tragedy.”

I’m happy for Alex and Toggle. Gram likely would be too, if she were IN the car.
