“It’s a bit ironic that “hoodie” is mentioned as the Zimmerman trial is going on.”-Not so much. It was written around the time public pressure was pushing to convict Zimmerman based on the fact that he mentioned a hoodie when he was asked by a police dispatcher for a physical description. -The fact that he had said the child looked suspicious because he was wandering around in the rain seeming to look over dwellings which had been burglarized recently was ignored. The nation made up our minds we KNEW exactly what happened and why and it had to be the fault of the Hispanic “cracker” because Hispanics are all bad. (sarcasm in there somewhere)

I know you miss him. He’ll be back next week.

DHG, I’ve seen that “seeming to look over buildings” claim in some other discussions – along with the more exaggerated “was peering into windows” and “was sneaking into people’s back yards” and other descriptions of suspicious behavior.

Just one problem – no one, not even the police, and certainly not any witnesses, has confirmed any of that. Zimmerman himself has not claimed any of those things – he claimed Martin was acting suspiciously, but never stated that he was walking anywhere but on a public walkway.

Quit making stuff up.

I’m not defending George Zimmerman. He had all the makings of another thug with a badge and a gun. Only he forgot to get the badge first. And when the police dispatcher told him to stand down, that is exactly what he should have done. My comment is more about the social climate that both of these people were in. It’s so sad that Trayvon couldn’t just be himself. He took upon himself a stereotype that is looked down on. Most Americans wonder why any kid has to his face within a hoodie. George, for whatever reason showed a type of pervasive paranoia that our country has. I try to speak of equality on here and respect for our fellow human beings, and then, I find myself wanting to ban baggy, saggy pants because it’s so gross. We all will never get over our preconceived notions, not all. But this trial, while a tragedy,may give us, Americans, a chance to take a real hard, long look at our notions and stereotypes. Maybe something good can come from this tragedy.

Next time someone waiting in line behind you at the ATM makes you nervous because of his age, race, or clothing choices, ask yourself: who’s more dangerous to my financial stability – the young black guy in the hoodie outside the bank, or the old white guy in the suit inside the bank?

That last was not aimed at any particular commenter here – just a random thought I had at the ATM recently.
