Roland: And how do you think it'll all turn out here, soldier? Soldier: No one cares what I think, sir... But I'm sure you've seen the same troop surveys that I have. Less than half of us now say we're likely to succeed in Afghanistan. Roland: Uh... right. Saw that. So where do the patriots sit? Soldier: Over by the grill.
Well, Simpsonfan, you didn’t attack Germany and Japan on false pretences, after destabilising the only modernist government they had ever had and replacing it with a rabble of warlords who in turn had to be taken down by a fundamentalist militia. You didn’t announce that you were bringing freedom, only to begin a colonial occupation with an incredibly incompetent and venal nonentity as your puppet president. You didn’t then hand over those countries right back to warlords and drone-murder wedding parties and schoolchildren. And most of all you didn’t do any of those things in Afghanistan, a country historically easy to defeat but impossible to conquer.
