Roland: And how do you think it'll all turn out here, soldier? Soldier: No one cares what I think, sir... But I'm sure you've seen the same troop surveys that I have. Less than half of us now say we're likely to succeed in Afghanistan. Roland: Uh... right. Saw that. So where do the patriots sit? Soldier: Over by the grill.

Roland wouldn’t know a true Patriot if he saw one. I true Patriot is like a true friend. That person will tell you the low down, dirty, unlovely and unlikely TRUTH, no matter what.

Well, Simpsonfan, you didn’t attack Germany and Japan on false pretences, after destabilising the only modernist government they had ever had and replacing it with a rabble of warlords who in turn had to be taken down by a fundamentalist militia. You didn’t announce that you were bringing freedom, only to begin a colonial occupation with an incredibly incompetent and venal nonentity as your puppet president. You didn’t then hand over those countries right back to warlords and drone-murder wedding parties and schoolchildren. And most of all you didn’t do any of those things in Afghanistan, a country historically easy to defeat but impossible to conquer.

Have you noticed that that the politicians who have never been in a war are the first to send our best into them?…I’m looking at you republicans….

We won previous wars because we had discernible sides and fought messy, relatively unrestricted warfare. these days we are hampered by polticians making minor decisions, lawyers in the field and ridiculous rules of engagement. With those reins, one will never win any conflict.

“We beat Germany and Japan. What did we do there that we didn’t do in Afghanistan, hmmm?”#We didn’t worry about “collateral” damage then, the way we seem to now. If a few eggs got broken, well, that is what happens when you want to make an omelet. Know what I mean?

What’s in Afghanistan to win?Time to leave.

The draft is a good idea when another country’s armies attack American soil. We need to put the world on notice that any terrorist activity against the US means we will chase the terrorists into ANY sovereign nation, we may let that nation know and if they try to keep us out without turning over the perps, we consider harboring a terrorist an act of war.
We need to use black ops for these missions, not our regular military. Any dirty tricks like waterboarding should not be done by regular military, we need a buffer for plausible denial.
I am sure that we could have taken bin ladin without regular troops going into Afganistan – We never should have gone into Iraq (or Korea or VN, or, or, or)

And as long as we control the UN, that is fine, but to have the UN try to interfere with our Constitution and Bill of Rights is a deal breaker.

Because that war was not micromanaged by a bunch of politically correct, bleeding heart liberals who tie the hands of our troops with BS rules of engagement. WWII was total war and no one was overly concerned with “collateral damage”. The non-combatants weren’t specifically targeted, but war is he’ll. Same crap that affected Vietnam. The military leadership is more concerned with politics than leading a fighting force.

The Red Army defeated the Germans.

I beg to differ. Fighting an organized, and clearly defined enemy is one thing. Fighting an insurgency (for lack of a better description) is quite another.

Morris Udall was probably my favorite politician because all his views were based on real life experiences. He had lost an eye as a child when a friend accidentally stabbed him with a pocket knife. When he was able to get into the Army, he was finally fitted with a glass eye that was right for him. He became a supporter of universal health care because he wanted all US citizens to get the care he got in the army. I know, that many people people that will point out that service members and especially veterans do not get the care they need or deserve. I just wanted to point the root of real life experience. His first assignment was as a white captain of an all-black company in the then segregated Army. For the rest of his life he supported civil rights. He left the Mormon Church because of its policy of excluding blacks. He rejoined the church after it changed its policy in 1977. Just a couple of weeks ago I met a couple of Mormon missionaries in my neighborhood, one of whom happened to be black. I thought to myself, this would make Morris Udall happy.A native of Apache County, he was concerned about preserving the natural beauty of Arizona and a strong supporter of environmental causes. Also as a native of Apache County, he was a strong advocate of Native American rights. He was also the funniest man in congress. After losing a presidential primary, he said, " the people have spoken – the bastards."As one Washington insider put it, “Morris Udall is too funny to be President.”

Has anyone heard the story about Osama bin Laden waking up on the other side, surrounded by 72 women—the most attractive of whom looked like Janet Reno on a bad day? The punchline: “Well, why did you think they are still virgins?”

I know. We can’t be the world cops anymore, its just too complicated.

kaffekup over 11 years ago
Sadly, scandals don’t mean anything to republicans. They get a standing ovation in Congress when they return. Democrats, on the other hand, just get Faux outrage.
