Lacey: ...and with the right private support, we think the shelter in Washington could become a model for the rest of the country. All in all, I think you'll find it a very worthy project. Woman 1: I'm sure we would, dear, but I don't know if it's for us. It's not that we don't care. Au contraire, we adore good causes. It's just that these shelters for the homeless have a way of encountering vagrancy. Woman 2: If only it were an animal shelter. Woman 1: Or a disease. If it were one of the big diseases I could have a party.

What would really be popular is a disease that homeless animals suffer.

It isn’t just rich people. I’m currently homeless, and I can tell you that the suggestions that I get clearly demonstrate that most people just do not get it.
“Why don’t you get a trailer?”
“There’s a homeless shelter in Macon.” Fine for me, but what about my belongings? (For a homeless person, I have a lot of stuff. It’s in storage now, but I’m about to lose it.)
Most people assume that there are programs in place, and facilities to fall back on around here. There aren’t.

Well, most places do have programs in place, but I’d be surprised if there is ANY U.S. city with sufficient programs. The need is overwhelming.

1985, The good old days, when Republicans just ignored the poor. Move forward to today, when the R’s want to punish the poor with tax increases (which would be the result of a flat tax) and benefit cuts. Compassionate conservatism? One of the all time great oxymorons.

All these years later and nothing has changed. Gotten worse, if that’s even possible.

Some cities are grappling with the problem of homelessness, for example, Medicine Hat, AB. See http://homelesshub.ca/resource/home-medicine-hat-%E2%80%93-our-5-year-plan-end-homelessness-%E2%80%93-year-5-progress-report

I forgot to mention property taxes. Although I will never sell (if I’m not forced,) because the propertythat my rentals are on is also my home.)
The County, which collects property taxes, has determined that our economy is booming, and therefore has raised my taxes by an extremely high amount (I won’t know the exact amount until November.) .Nothing is ever as simple as it seems.

Shelters encourage vagrancy in the same way life preservers encourage drowning.

Ronald Reagan said that they weren’t homeless, they were camping.
