20 years ago is a good reference to 40 years ago. 50 elicits a sigh. As does 55 and (groan) 60. Years ago. Let’s have a show of hands from all the girls and boys who remember Sputnik. No cheating, you had to be potty trained.
In Len Deighton’s series about his nameless spy (known as Harry Palmer in the movies), someone remarks that the main character is incapable of passing a highway marker without burying a bag containing a pistol, a passport, and some money. Never know when or where you’ll need those things…
I’m sure that at least a few people don’t know some of this (from Wikipedia). :-)
“The Krugerrand (/ˈkruːɡərænd/; Afrikaans: [ˈkrœjərˌrant]) is a South African coin, first minted on 3 July 1967 to help market South African gold and produced by Rand Refinery and the South African Mint. The name is a compound of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic (depicted on the obverse), and rand, the South African unit of currency. On the reverse side of the Krugerrand is a springbok, South Africa’s national animal.”
Didn’t it turn out that the USSR in fact had nowhere near the resources that would have been required to pose a viable threat to the USA? Am I misremembering that from somewhere?

The great weakness of fundamentally corrupt people is assuming that everyone else thinks the same way they do.

Don’t remember Sputnik. My earliest memories outside of my family were Apollo 11, and then Kent State.
