I blame the guy that said one day " We need more market share so lets figure out how to put corn into every freaking thing on the planet". Now it’s even in my can of green beans. I mean really, what does corn have to do with green beans? And, hey, here’s an idea. How about we put high fructose corn syrup into every food product to make it more addictive than crack cocaine. It’s truly amazing what humans will do to each other to make a quick buck rather than earning customer loyalty. Okay, I’m done no more rants until after tomorrow.
@nrhawk – Yes, greed’s at the center of the thing, but the blame can hardly all be heaped upon one individual. If one were to blame a single individual, it would probably have to be Earl Butz, Nixon’s Secretary of Agriculture. He’s the person who changed the U.S.‘s agricultural policy to emphasize yield above all else, placing us on a path toward such high yields of low-quality (non-human grade) corn that we can’t use it all without turning it into unhealthy food additives, feed that farm animals can’t digest without additional drugs and chemicals, gasoline, etc. As a result, our best farmland is being degraded, aquifers are being depleted, small-scale farms are scarce, the American diet is horrific, etc., etc. Butz and the powers-that-be have created a terrifying monster.
