Why do people have their doors permanently locked? In Canada we rarely have to do that. We trust our neighbours (with good reason) and we look out for each other. Americans do not trust anyone (not that I have ever seen). That mistrust is 90% in the cities. Rural folks do trust because they rely on each other a lot.
