I see Marx casually strolling along as if the surroundings are completely normal, while Wally is looking about as if to say, “Where the heck are we?” I suspect a dream sequence with a specific message to show, but nothing is ever black-and-white with Marx (pun mostly intended).
“Oh, the buzzin’ of the bees in the cigarette trees / the soda water fountain / where the lemonade springs and the bluebird sings / in that Big Rock Candy Mountain.”
The original lyrics to The Big Rock Candy Mountains was about a hobo’s ideal life. It had cigarette trees, all the cops had wooden legs, and bulldogs with rubber teeth.
If that is the dimensionilizer that Aaron is swinging, he treats it very casually for the device he says allows him to travel among the worlds – and is irreplaceable.
Nice to see you back, Aaron. Hope the health’s okay? (I have to stay healthy for another year and a quarter before I get any kind of insurance myself. You have my sympathies.)
It has struck me before, if it wasn’t for the IP and copyright lawyers young Mr. Marx would be seen hanging with The Doctor, his bro…
Glad to see your work again Mr. Neatherly! I like the color I am thinking of the 1939 “Wizard of Oz” film as a reference point. Between Kansas and Oz, here between the world and this VR world.
Possibly an unpopular comment, but I like the color. Often, the grey scale hides important details in the artwork. But I agree with others above who have said that, with Aaron and Wally in black-and-white, this must be a dream sequence!
I enjoy colour, too. But it takes Neathery longer to create a colour strip than a grey one, and there’s a limited budget of person-hours to do it in. If we had full-colour strips every time, we may not get three strips every week. I did colour several of the existing strips for promotional purposes, over the years. I’m not sure how to share the files with you, but I can show you somehow.

Hopefully this will be the intro to a lighter story arc. We don’t need another dark, brutal ’pig slaughter" arc anytime soon.

Notice Marx and Wally are in black and white. Wonder if this is someone’s Dream?

Hm… Wally’s here… In Candy Land… with Marx… And they are in black and white while the world is in color……… comment stating the obvious is checked.

Could be backlash against the complaints about too dark of a story, last time around.. Gentle backlash, though!

This is sort of disquieting, like the poppy field in the Wizard of Oz movie. Stay on the damn path!
Yellow sky, too. Not quite right.
And all those Big Rock Candy Mountain thoughts? Going back to the original version, not the Bowdlerized one, and there’s a rough, sinister side to it.

@Dragoncat: Perhaps the “grass” is grape flavored. It has the right color.
