I was working in our church garden one morning when I heard a raucous bird call. The property is about 2 acres in the middle of a 60,000 population town, but we have lots of undeveloped areas about 2 miles away, so lots of wild critters come into town to “visit” us. I had never heard this particular bird call—it sounded like a giant squeaky toy being stomped on. I figured it for some kind of raptor, but it didn’t sound like a common red-tail. Then I spotted it flying from tree to tree—it was definitely a hawk, but chubbier than a red-tail. When I got home, I looked up raptor calls on the internet … and there it was: a red-shouldered hawk, complete with “squeaky toy” call. I’ve seen it and its mate several times since then, including one Sunday morning during our outdoor “Blessing of the Seeds” service, when they were being harassed by a flock of noisy crows, drowning out the minister!
Bald eagles are hard to find? Depends on where you are.
I once saw several together on the beach below a restaurant. Another time, I was sitting in a friend’s office with an open door and one came flying toward me. I thought I would be dive-bombed, but it veered away just a few feet from the doorway.

That eagle looks angry. Maybe he prefers being called folliclely challenged instead of bald?
