Don’t talk when you eat, John (specially on that last note).

Well, if that’s the case, Elle apparently did a good job in picking Jean last time.

I swear that’s what they do at my husband’s eye clinic, quite a selection: all the wives must be in charge of HR.

I wonder why I can’t get hired, I’m not young and do have skills. Wife would not be jealous. Why do employers only hire the younger workers when they do not stay on the job long just as his dental assistant. Us mature workers would.

If you look at the expression on John’s face in the last panel, you will see that he is joking (or thinks he is, anyway.) A giveaway: he had been answering Michael’s question, so for most of the strip, had been facing and talking to Michael. But as he finished up, he turned to face Elly. Maybe he’s trying to make up for his thoughtless comment a fews days ago, when he told Elly that it would be easier to replace a wife than an assistant… Either way, I am convinced that this is just another example of his humor and not his actual practice in hiring.

Hire a fine looking himbo. For the pleasure of the mommies who take the kiddies for their check-ups.

In small family businesses this is a truism of the first order.

Funny! That reminds me of the wife of my “worst boss” (one I’ve discussed in detail on Working Daze). His WIFE was also a piece of work. She decorated the walls of our engineering offices with her own art and pieces that she selected (not too bad) but also wanted to dictate just what we could have in plain sight in our own cubicles.

Thanks for providing this old comic. It shows that John’s weird sense of humor had been around a long time. Hmmm. Maybe my lack of appreciation for (or understanding of) his humor explains why I can’t figure out when you’re trying to be funny? Stranger things have happened….

Lynn’s Notes:After the applications for a new receptionist had been whittled down to a few, we called each girl out of the blue to see what her telephone attitude was like. An answer like, “Who? Who’s calling? Hey, you kids shut the H* up, I’m on the %#&@^ phone!” was a definite “no.”*To see this illustrated, check the strip for 09/21/04http://catalog.fborfw.com/indexdate.php?q=2004-09-21&Submit=Search

A dental assistant in Iowa got fired for being too attractive. Her boss claimed she was distracting. It went to the Iowa supreme court who upheld the dentist right to fire her
