“Get to the bank before it closes”? I remember my first bank ATM during my college years so it would have been around 1981-2 when they had the drawers where you could drop your cheques and a bank deposit slip. I guess by 1989, Elly has not yet learned about after hours deposits.
“A few bags into the back seat”? John’s sports car continues not to be the sports car he bought a few years ago, which was a T-top convertible two-seater that Elly complained about because you had no room for groceries in it. It appears that somewhere along the line, John bought a different sports car.
All the banks in our town have been closed down. They’ve taken their ATMs with them and have the temerity to claim they only close branches as a last resort. They lie of course but that’s the UK for you these days.
I think an accident happened! Not only do I anxiously wait for tomorrow, I would like to see how Dr. John would react when he returns to see his sports car damaged.
Why would anyone think that John Patterson would go ballistic over damage to his car, especially if it was someone else’s fault? (We don’t know that, but it’s my surmise.) He’s portrayed as an even-tempered jokester, not a martinet or overly attached to possessions.
The term sports car indeed meant the type John originally bought , A 2000 pound car usually convertible, such as an MGB or a Triumph TR4. My car is a sporty car and does 0 – 60 in 4.6 seconds, but is not a sports car. It can haul some bags in the back. But e.g. a Miata not so much.
For some reason I do not recall this plot from the original publication dates, so it is going to be interesting… did Elly hit someone else, or did someone else hit Elly?

Distracted driving is incredibly common and very dangerous. Even if you’re only distracted by your thoughts, as Elly is here, you’re still distracted!

The best laid plans of men and mice … they will end with a bang.

Is that bang coming from the front or the back of the car. I can’t wait.

I was waiting for the siren.

My first thought was that the “BANG” could be a gunshot, but there is a low chance of that.

I love my 26 year old 2000 lb rear wheel drive ragtop! Most smiles per gallon on the road than anything I have driven the last 40 years.

I have a feeling the accident is Elly’s fault, since Lynn has her thinking about everything except her driving and the cars around her.

At my bank, if it isn’t deposited before 2p, it isn’t credited to the account until the next business day.

A collision. A collision.
Not an accident. All accidents are preventable.
From seeing how people drive nowadays—passing and weaving,
I’m just sick when I have to go on the highway.
Then you see the same car at the turn off, just before
or beside you, so all that weaving was putting others
in danger, and the person didn’t get that far anyway….
