Wheel of Fortune and Funniest Home Videos are recognizable programs that Lynn Johnston is taking a shot at. As for the others:
1. I can’t tell if the Donald / Dolores one is about Barbara being fooled into marrying a woman dressed as a man who decided she wanted to wear Barbara’s clothing, or one of those comedies where the man dresses up as woman (like Bosom Buddies), or a forward-thinking look at gender identification comedy that would play well in today’s TV market.
2. Sadly, blood-soaked asparagus is probably not about a cooking show.
We can still catch Wheel of Fortune, cheesy soap operas, Law and Order and America’s Funniest Videos today! If this strip wasn’t re-written, its got amazing legs!
Lynn has a great comment about this strip on her website:
Lynn’s Comments: Sunday pages gave me the opportunity to stretch things out. It was especially enjoyable when I could come up with TV jargon and funny game show dialogue. “I’ll take a P” and the subject of cross-dressing were against the censorship rules, but in a case like this, it was lost in the mix. Great fun.
In memory of Alex Trebek, Lynn could do a strip where Elly is a contestant on Jeopardy. She loses because she cannot answer the last question. The final panel could say “Unfortunately, the day after Elly dropped out, they had a class which discussed the same subject as the Final Jeopardy question!”
Years ago, I’d have me-days. I’d go out, buy all the trash mags, chocolate, wine, whatever. Come home, flop on the bed in comfy clothes, and proceed to read that trash with whatever was on on tv. While pigging out. That routine stopped the day one of them put a photo of poor little Jon-Benet’s body in. Uncensored. Never. Again.
Every year at the county fair I used to get a funnel cake, loaded with grease and powdered sugar. About halfway through it, I’d find myself wondering why I thought that would be a good idea.
Have you ever had a refrigerator full and yet there’s nothing to eat?
Either there nothing on TV you want to watch or there’s five or six at one time. I hate when that happens!!! I usually flip from one to another and repeat…

Junk food for bloodstreams and junk TV for eyeballs & brains. That’s a steady diet for most of the world where there’s electricity.

This reminds me of The Tappit Brothers’ solution to funny noise car problems: “Can you turn up the radio to where you can’t hear it?”

Yup. Sometimes a good veg out is just the thing to take the edge off. …by veg I mean potato chips, any thing called crisp and pure sugar evil.

I get that. At the same time, it’s a poignant reminder of what an intellectual wasteland the mainstream media has become.

With me, it’s a Big Mac. Once or twice a year, I get a mad craving for one. Halfway though it, I wonder why and throw the rest away.

It’s chocolate or nothing, for this girl. Some old costume period movie on TV, and hot tea.

I heard Lynn once say that this Sunday strip was a sneaky way to slip “I’ll take a P” and reference crossdressing past the censors.
