Lawrence is glad to be back in the house, so he is wisely not saying anything. But if he were to say something to his mother, I would think it should be something like, “My friends are the same friends I had before. Remember Michael, the guy who brought me home? He’s my friend.”
If she thinks she will never understand, then she needs to go to a PFLAG meeting.
If he thinks he can suddenly respect Lawrence, after throwing him out 9 hours ago, I got news for him—you are only saying that under pressure from Connie.
Greg, 9 pm: “Get out! You disgust me! Loser! You’re sick! Go play in traffic!” ……. Midnight: …… <beam of light illuminates Greg from above in a swirling, translucent tempest> …. .. ..<brief angelic chorus, then everything goes silent>….. Greg: “Oh my gosh… I feel awful!” ….. Greg, 7 am: “I love you, I respect you, and I completely accept your lifestyle!” …….. Uhm, right. The only other place I’ve seen such a dramatic transformation in someone’s beliefs/attitudes is in a Charles Dickens story…
An excellent and not at all unexpected ending to this piece of their lives. It does amaze me though how these fictional comic characters actually act more human than many of the living breaking “humans” reading this strip.
I know being from West Indian decent, my father would’ve had two coronaries if I told him I was gay! I definitely would’ve gotten thown out out of the house! I was in junior high chool and he got very upset when I came home with my hair in cornrows!
“I’m naming you after the woman in Leaving Las Vegas. Now I’ll have to correct the vet office all the time because they’ll keep misspelling your name.”
Lawrence has brought credit to LGBT groups such as Gays & Lesbians Against Defamation, the Gay Nigger Association of America, and Parents & Friends of Lesbians & Gays.
What’s interesting is it looks like Greg hasn’t actually accepted Lawrence’s orientation while Connie is trying to.Greg says that he will respect him as long as he is good and kind, but it doesn’t show that he actually accepts that Lawrence is gay. I’m not saying this to criticize to comic, if anything, it looks like it was done deliberately.Anyway, I thought Greg married Connie a few years ago, but the way he’s going on here it sounds like he just married her.
In case this hasn’t been mentioned elsewhere, the most widely acclaimed support group for LGBTQ youths is The Trevor Project, www.thetrevorproject.org with counselors available 24/7 by phone, text and email.
Perhaps this happens offscreen. But I don’t see any apology for the inexcusable action of Greg’s throwing Lawrence out, and Connie’s failing to stop him from doing so. Maybe I’m “hardcore”, but saying everything will be just dandy from now on without acknowledging the awful thing they did is not acceptable. Greg is still a jerk and Connie’s a poor excuse for a mother, IMO.
Advice for Lawrence: Stay away from Milwaukee. Also, if you are at a birthday party where Pogo the Clown was hired to entertain the guests, run like hell!
Well, so far this storyline is going at a much different track than I would have thought. Was the original in the 80’s or 90’s? In the late 80’s and early 90’s I was going through my own education with college roommates. Came to a realization that I really didn’t have an issue with their sexual orientation. My Mom may have been raised by a bigot/racist/homophobe, but when I (and my sister) started explaining our friends, she was open to change. I do miss her.
When I came out, my stepdad said that he could accept it under two conditions:
1) I was careful (this was the beginning of the AIDS epidemic – AZT wasn’t even on the radar)2) He was still allowed to make dad jokes about it, like he did everything else! :-D

Rare for people to turn around opinions and positions like that overnight over such things. Only in the comic strips?

Well done, Lynn. The way you covered this topic should be part of every middle school and high school curriculum. Sadly it won’t be.

Good ending. I might have rated it higher, if an episode of “Barney Miller” hadn’t had the same theme, with the same use of “Que Sera, Sera.”
