I always enjoyed putting Ruth, my mom-in-law, in the strip. (Her second name was Carrie.) I tried to get a good likeness and used photographs until I could draw her fairly well. She was my right and left hand when the kids were small. I was so lucky to have had her in my life.
Believe me, you don’t want your grandmother living with you. When I was a teenager we had BOTH grandmothers living with us. They didn’t like each other and I was their rope in their attention tug-of-war. What’s worse is that I had to share my room with one of them.
I don’t understand why some of the commenters read this scrip. They always complain about someone. April is a child; she’s not a pill and not responsible for Farley’s death. I think some of you just like to stir up trouble.
Both the house and the heart could have had the empty room filled up with a loving and attentive pet, if only someone knew how to follow simple instructions.
Farley did what most dogs would do. It was just that time in his life that the exertion was too much for his old body. Doing what he did taught Edgar a lesson also just like teaching him other things when Edgar became a member of the family. Just like a good father does.
This comic today touches my heart so deeply, both of my grandma’s are passed away, one when I was 11 months old and the other when I was 25 years old. Also, April putting her hands to her heart and saying “empty here” just gets me and making me cry because of how I feel about my sister passing away, my heart feels broken and empty since she has been gone.
I am sorry for mentioned my sister’s death so often but this story arc just tears at my heart and I am still in deep mouring and miss her so much and talking about her helps my healing a little everyday.
And thankfully, this arc is pretty much over, and hopefully the trolls who enjoyed stirring up crap over a sad but sweet 30 year old story and/or using it for a political platform will crawl back under their bridges and disappear. Geez, there are other things to get off on here, people, including an ENTIRE political comic section.

Lynn should revisit this family. April would be 33…

Leave that alone. She is still a child. She could not have understood what could happen if she went to the water. Responsibility comes with age.

It may take some time, but Farley Jr. will fill part of the empty spot.

Elizabeth said nice things even when she did not get a penny of handouts from her grandmother. That is actually being part of a family.

Even though this is a comic, this one really touches the heart! Also, hated to see Farley go.

Nothing is more powerful than being loved by a small child.

Sensitivity and sentimentality. Two things April clearly didn’t get from her soulless mother.

Or this for a strip…
Airport. Pattersons say their last goodbyes to Carrie Patterson
Elizabeth: Where is April?
Elly: Not again!
April is seen at the gate, holding Carrie’s hand
April: Bye! I am going to live with Gramma forever! I will write.
John: APRIL!!! Get back here!
John has his hand firmly on April’s wrist as Pattersons depart airport
Elly: Missed your chance. We could’ve bought her a ticket.
John: Dear!

Does April even feel any guilt for Farley’s death? Are they going to address that issue at all?

Boy, they sure have “moved on” from Farley’s death pretty quickly.
