Andy: Your teacher called today, Jason. Jason: Oh? Andy: She says you've been hiding magazines in your textbooks and reading them during class hours. She says she doesn't know what to do iwht you. One idea was to let you guest-lecture Jason: The American journal of physics isn't really a "magazine" by the way.

Reminds me of someone I know who had an incident with teacher for not paying attention during class - reading secretly Treasure Island while he was supposed to learn his letters.

paha_siga, aww typical!
My son got to go to the library and read, along with one girl from his class, when the other kids were learning to read. I quite liked that solution.

I remember a math teacher caught me for not doing ‘math. I was asked ‘Well, what are you doing?’ My answer” “Oh just reading an article from Scientific American on the formation of Black Holes.” Never was bothered by that question again.

By letting Jason lecture to class and keep class interested might be interesting. The magazine based on science should get him a better grade.

Why isn’t Jason in a gifted & talented program or skipping grades?

Lew, don’t blame unions for bad employees. Put the blame where it belongs - on lazy managers who can’t be bothered to gather the evidence needed to fire the bad employee.
No, blame the Unions for making it dang near impossible to GATHER the evidence - because everyone else is covering it up. Also blame the Unions for costing you your job when the company A) goes belly up or B) outsources the high-priced Union jobs overseas, or C) All of the above.
The unions have priced themselves out of the market - and some few dumb bunnies still think they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread. BTDT first hand knowledge.
BTW - Indiana is also a “closed shop” state - at least following “Beck”, et al. at the Supreme Court, they HAVE to allow you to work - and a smart non-union employee in a union shop CAN get that representation fee reduced! The unions have to file a detailed financial report and one of the LINE ITEMS is the cost of representation. Divide that by their total expenses, and present to judge or arbitrator.
End of discussion.
BTD THAT, too!

How does that relate to a really smart kid who should be in a “gifted” program?

Hey RadioTom, I’m one of those dumb bunnies! If you enjoy 40 hour (or less) workweeks, paid vacations, sick leave, safe working conditions etc, etc. then you should be thanking unions, not slagging them.
Your post is instructive in demonstrating that if we let the unions die, we’ll be back to sweatshop labor within a generation. Thanks!

I read in class. It’s better than correcting the teacher.
