Mrs. Olsen: You haven't started your summer reading? Caulfield: Maybe. Mrs. Olsen: You need to nip this in the butt. Caulfield: Bud. Mrs. Olsen: You don't want to grow up to be a chronic procrastinator. Caulfield: No, but I can put it off as long as possible.

I think Caulfield wins this round.

She’s an avid gardener, you’d think she would know what “nip it in the bud” means.

“nip it in the butt” is such interesting imagery though

My guess is he already read (and re-read) everything on the list years ago.

As I grow older, chronic procrastination becomes more attractive day by day.

Never sat on a bench talking to any of my teachers, ever! The Vice Principal from my High School would, on occasion, give me a ride the last mile of my 3 mile walk to school. Procrastination & chronic? So does your ’crastination get worse then? How long does it take for it to become terminal? Sounds tiring…

Go ahead, nip Caufield in the butt. He deserves it.

What would “concrastination” be?

I was (more than) nipped in the butt last week while riding my bike. Would much rather have nipped some bud.

Visited a friends house when I was a kid, every time his mother would go to put dishes in the dishwasher, clothes in the washer, their dog would bite her. She stormed off all angry, the friend was embarassed, and I told him, “With a problem like this you want to nip it in the bud”. We both thought it was hilarious.

Caulfield is not just a procrastinator, but a pedantic procrastinator.

Thank you for properly separating the balloons in today’s strip. Makes reading easier and is much appreciated.

I’m going to quit procrastinating! Tomorrow.

Funny how when Caulfield corrects her with the word “bud,” her response refers to “chronic” procrastination. Coincidence or cynical foreshadowing? Then again, Caulfield already premeditates everything he does, even wasting time. As he gets older he might experiment casually with a few substances, but his primary addiction will still be too distracting to let in other habits. Epistemophilia is harder to kick than any external chemical.

Procrastination? I’ll do that tomorrow.
