One of those things that will happen because you think it will happen.

We used to start slumping about the time Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom was finishing up.

Does this mean Mrs. Olsen et al, will have fairly straight forward class periods. or does it mean Caulfield is going into a grim phase. Will he become POE-etical?

Possibly the most important part of any training plan is the rest/recovery day. That’s why I never plan them. Because this busy, complicated world is going to throw a rest day in my face anyway every so often, and curiously, about as often as I need them. Letting it happen on the world’s schedule sounds like concession, but it’s really quite liberating. It’s one less thing to think you can, and must, control when you really can’t. And they’re a lot less frustrating that way, adding an aspect of relief to something you used to curse.

If only I could bring myself closer to feeling that way about bad days. Days when you can’t get out of your own way, when everything hurts, when your technique reverts to sub-novice and the end of the workout, the end of any given PART of the workout, seems to come along so slowly. Those days are like rain: Normal and regular, if random, and essential for growth. And hardly anybody likes rain.

But maybe there’s a reason I live in Michigan where it rains, and maybe there’s a reason I love sports and jobs that humble me. You need the bad days to get to the good days. Hell, you need the bad days to recognize the good days. And as many times as I’ve wished I lived elsewhere, I’d rather put up with some rain than be jaded by the sun.

    So I’m getting there.
