In the Outback we didn’t use any sort of filter. We had a metal pot with a wire handle, filled with water and brought to boil over the fire. We used a rope with a steel hook on one end to lift the pot out of the fire by its handle. The “barista” dumped in a measured amount (“handfuls”) of coffee grounds, then swung the coffee pot on the rope like a lasso for a minute, or until the arm gave out. The coffee grounds were tightly packed into a mat at the bottom of a pot of very tasty coffee.
There have been times when my feet were so cold, I had a hard time deciding between drinking hot coffee or pouring it in my boots. Naturally, drinking won. Sugar makes socks sticky. ICK!!
I just learned that the ‘sinus’ headaches I’ve been having are actually migraines and after some research I also learned that I need to quit drinking coffee :‘( I only have on in the morning. That’s it! But that’s enough/too much. :/
Frazz19 hrs · Don’t feel like it’s just you; I’m a coffee geek and I had the same reaction when I first heard about Sock Coffee, even though it was described as “Sock Coffee” and not “Used Sock Coffee.” And you can predict, successfully, that it’s really just another way of making pour-over coffee, the hippest of the hip methods these days. Which is not a lot different from how the unhippest of the unhip Mr. Coffee machine makes coffee.
I’m good with all sorts of kinds of coffee, although if you ask me, if you want the best coffee you’ll employ pressure (a la Aeropress), steam (a la Moka pot), or, best of all, steam and pressure (a la espresso). I hope that says something about my personality beyond liking coffee that’s intensely flavorful without being bitter. But that might be too easy an answer.

Pity none of these kids ever grow up – one of the pleasures of growing older is getting to say “I told you so” to the younger generation.
