Google the ‘Ocean Cleanup’ group. They have a video of their “Interceptor 006 captured hundreds of truckloads of trash – and counting – in just a few hours in the first flood of the year – all prevented from reaching the Caribbean Sea.”
Recent news article mentions plastic found in internal organs of deceased persons. It’s much worse than anyone can imagine.
Reminds me of a book Mutant 59: The Plastic-Eaters {Kit Pedlar, Jerry Davis, 1971]. A very well told story that heralds the ultimate end of humanity via over use of plastics.
Another great sci-fi tome is The Day of the Triffids [John Wyndham, 1951]. Nothing to do with plastics but a great read.
We pick up trash all over the world. Each piece makes a difference to the earth underneath it. That little part of the earth can now feel the sun, the wind, the rain. And everyone, even in their peripheral vision sees the natural harmonious earth and not a trashed out spot. Repeated hundreds of thousands of times over the past six years, makes a difference.
When I worked in retail grocery I always wondered why the produce guys wrapped stuff in plastic when the consumer was going to wash the item before cooking. The part about “it looks nicer when the lights shine on it” was just as bad, especially when I’m out in the garden picking things like beans and carrots and strawberries and surmising that simply rubbing the dirt off would make it clean.
Dumpsters don’t get emptied into the ocean. At least not in the US. The problem is third world countries who do not have effective garbage collection. Even countries such as India do not do good job handling their garbage. Rivers there are open sewers effectively.
People in my city are fighting the changes that are being made, anger at e bikes and bike lanes that aren’t being used or being used improperly.
I’ve never owned a car or had a drivers license. ND used arbitrary outbursts of rage to keep me from doing things like learn how to drive so I can’t take all the credit but I can say I’m glad that my carbon footprint is infinitely smaller than anyone who has driven a car for any length of time.
If you yell at me to stay off the road on my little e bike, I’m following the traffic rules, using blinkers and hand signals, I will SMH and call you a dinosaur!

There are a lot of things we really don’t need that still suck money out of consumers. My prime example is GLITTER. O. M. Freakin’ G!

You’re either part of the solution, or you’re part of the precipitate.

Trump legalized industrial hemp. A lot of products that are currently made from plastic and paper could be made from industrial hemp.

98% of the trash in the oceans comes from 7 rivers in Asia and Africa.

Don’t get the binary application. Guessing the 2 parts are the desire to eliminate plastics and taking action to make it happen.

How did you know that the straws were plastic? A lot of restaurants I go to use paper straws.

Drinking straws cause wrinkles. It’s a scientific fact.

Never liked straws anyway even as a kid.

At some point it’s eco-theatre. Only of value to yourself, to feel better. If that floats your boat, sure go ahead. But don’t imagine it matters.

We produce more trash per capita than most, but the vast majority of the plastics in the ocean do not come from us.

In Germany, plastic straws are forbidden since a few years. Just a droplet, of course.

One fewer piece of plastic.
