As I recall the story, for YEARS after de Lesseps, “panamista” was sort of ‘pidgin French’ for “swindle”!

Canada is a strange country, they had access to British politics, French culture, and American ‘know how’. They ended up with British ‘know how’, French politics, and American culture!! And it was a CANADIAN who said that!
I grew up and was educated in one of the few places in the United States where you can look DUE SOUTH and see Canada. And NO, NOT in Alaska! I’ll let YOU figure out where it is.
