Before I heard the audio recording demonstrating “Vocal Fry,” I was saying to myself, “Oh, good grief!” expecting it to be some incredibly lame trend where people try to sound like they’re speaking through and Autotune filter or something equally daft.
I was surprised, however, to hear a sound that’s not at all new. As for as I know, I’ve been hearing people make that sound in normal conversation for as far back as I can remember.
I think usually when I hear somebody make that sound, it’s because they’re saying “ahhh….” as they’re trying to formulate a thought or find the right words to express that thought.
